Roger Gene Sumpter, age 63, died of heart disease on December 5, 2015, at his sister's home in Bakersfield, California, formerly of Centerville, Iowa and Husiford, Wisconsin.

Roger is survived by his son, Michael Louis Sumpter, of Durango, Colorado, his daughters: Christel Rae Sumpter, of Centerville, Iowa, Kelli Jo Sumpter, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and, Terri Child Zummak, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, his grandchildren: Desirae Murphy(Mike), Frankie Rose Scarlett, and Tristen Scarlett, his great granddaughter: Arieana Murphy, his sister-in-laws, Darlene Sumpter of Moulton, and Mary Strickler of Centerville, and his sister, Gloria Jean Melliti, of Bakersfield, California, a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and his lifelong friend and hunting buddy, John Rushing. Roger is dearly missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Robert Sumpter, and Ruby Marie Sumpter, his three brothers: Gary Robert, Randy Darwin, Milton Earl, his sister: Julie Ann, his sister-in-law: Nikki Hogg Sumpter, and his great granddaughter, Raelin Jo Sumpter.

Roger was born on May 6, 1952 in Rockford, Illinois, to his parents, Reverend Robert Pearl Sumpter and Ruby Marie White Sumpter. He worked in Waterloo, Iowa at John Deere's and earned a degree in National Welding. He also worked at Iowa Steel & Wire in Centerville, Iowa. He was a machine adjuster and supervisor. He later moved to Wisconsin and accepted another position as a welder at John Deere's where he worked until he retired in 2009.

Roger was a great family man and a loving father. He married Carmen Maser on September 20, 1975 and the couple's children are Michael Louis, Christel Rae, and Kelli Jo. He was also married to Carolyn J. Thone.

Roger was a social, active man who was deeply involved in fishing, hunting, and loved cooking for the majority of his life. He loved PJ's seasoning salt. Recently, he was making his own bratwursts, ground beef, and canning his homegrown tomatoes. He enjoyed his yearly garden, country music, and his pets, especially his dogs. His family and friends will always remember him as a giving, caring, and an overall good guy who loved a good joke.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 AM, Thursday, March 24, 2016 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville, Iowa with Pastor Lloyd Johnston officiating. A reception will follow at the Dale Church, north of Centerville. Inurnment will follow at a later date in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Cincinnati, Iowa. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Roger's life. The family would like to thank the Lange Funeral Home.
