Ivan J. Walter, a long time resident of Moravia, Iowa, passed away Sunday, September 13, 2015 at Long Term Care in Centerville, Iowa at the age of 99 years and 11 months.

Ivan was born October 14, 1915 to John and Estella (Sheilds) Walter in Wyoming where his family owned a horse ranch. Ivan was the 8th and last child born to John and Estella, and the only boy.

When Ivan was 9 his father died. His mother remarried and he and his youngest sister moved with their parents to a farm east of Unionville, Iowa in 1924.
Ivan was a graduated from Unionville High School in 1933. One of his first jobs out of high school was at the Hotel Yancey in Grand Island, Nebraska. After 3 years he moved back to Moravia and bought a gas station and worked with leather. He tried to enlist in the army, but they wouldn't take him, because they said his leather harness making business was too valuable to the farmers who used horses to do the farm work in the 1930's.

In 1940 Ivan married Audrey Burton of Bunch, Iowa. They were married 63 years and spent those years in Moravia, Iowa.

Ivan was a hard worker and had many jobs throughout his life. He was best known for his business, Walter's Interior Service, which was housed on the square in Moravia, Iowa from 1939 until 1986 when he retired due to Audrey's health.

Ivan liked to hunt and told of many experiences hunting on the land that is now under Lake Rathbun. He also was an avid fisherman, spending many hours over the years in his boat fishing on Lake Rathbun. He was given a love of music by his father, and played several musical instruments throughout his life.

Audrey passed away in 2004 and in 2005, he married Margaret (Spring, Bronson) Riggs. They enjoyed 10 years together before her death in early 2015.
He was a lifelong church member and most recently, he attended the Unionville Baptist Church, in Unionville, Iowa, the same church he attended in the 1920s as a young boy.

Ivan was preceded in death by his parents; seven sisters; two wives; and four infant children.

He is survived by four step-children; fifteen step-grandchildren; twenty four step-great- grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, September 17, 2015 at Lange Funeral Home in Moravia, Iowa with Pastor Josh Davenport officiating. Burial will follow in the Taylor Cemetery.
