Helen Louise Thomas, age 94 of Centerville, Iowa passed away Thursday, March 31, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville, Iowa.

She was born in Appanoose County, Iowa on January 23, 1922, the daughter of Elmer and Isal Phelps. Helen attended school until sixth grade. She then took care of her nine siblings. Helen was united in marriage to Raymond Thomas on June 24, 1939 in Centerville.

Helen enjoyed gardening, watching and picking apples from her apple tree, as well as her pear tree. She enjoyed fishing at Lake Rathbun and watching birds from her living room window. She loved flowers, humming birds, and finches that ate from her bird feeder.

She is survived by two sisters, Barb (Bob) Steen of Des Moines, and Norma McMahon of Centerville; two brothers, Norman (Ellen) Phelps of Des Moines and Don (Sharon) Phelps of Mystic; five grandchildren, Terry Large, Timmy Large, Deanna (Bruce) Russell, Paula (Chris) Crow, and Danny (Lisa) Crow; eight great grandchildren, Travis Davis, Tyson Davis, Gavin Foglesong, James Crow, Delaney Crow, Michelle Graham, Raymond Russell, and Addy; also, many great-great grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond; two daughters, Rae Lynne (Larry) Crow and Dixie Large; one brother, Jesse Phelps; and four sisters, Pauline Thomas, Juanita Thomas, Ethel Rice, and Carol Wilson.

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville, Iowa with Pastor Brian Hargrave officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery, Centerville. A visitation will take place on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Lange Funeral Home, with the family greeting friends from 11AM-1 PM.
