Edna Luciel Downard, age 91, of Moravia, Iowa passed away Tuesday, October 06, 2015 at the Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa.

She was born June 24, 1924 on her family's farm south of Moravia, Iowa, the daughter of Doug and Elizabeth (Miller) Turner. Edna and her family attended Sunday school and church services at the Wesley Chapel Church, south of Moravia near Hiattsville. Her father passed away when Edna was 4 years old and her mother later married W.C. Anderson. The family then moved to Fairfield, Iowa, where Edna attended school. After graduating from Fairfield High School, Edna worked at the Maid-Rite in Fairfield.

Edna was married to Dale Downard and they had one son, John Douglas (J.D.) who was born August 8, 1948. Dale and Edna enjoyed living in several states while Dale served in the US Marine Corps, including California, Texas, South Caroline and Illinois. After Dale's discharge from the Marines, they moved back to Iowa and lived in Fairfield, Fort Madison, Knoxville and finally, came back to the family farm so that Edna could help care for her mother.

While stationed in Ocean Side, California, they lived near the military base. Edna loved to tell the story of meeting the actor John Wayne. Mr. Wayne was filming one of his movies on the base and visited with Dale, Edna and J.D. several times. Edna always remembered him as being a very friendly and down to earth person.

Edna and J.D. attended the Rathbun Country Music Theater from the first show in 1974 until her health prevented her from going. Edna truly enjoyed getting out of the house to go to town or just to take a drive and most times, she would be content to sit in the car and "people watch." Edna also enjoyed watching NASCAR and collecting the pins that the Knoxville raceway gave out every year for the Sprint Car races. She also loved making ceramics and collecting dolls.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents; step father; siblings; step siblings; and in July of this year, her son J.D..

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, October 10, 2015 at the Haines Cemetery, north of Centerville with Pastor Dennis Doud officiating. A visitation will take place on Saturday at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville from 9 AM-10:15.
