Tribute & Message From The Family

Josephine (Gnatta) Vola, 96, passed away Thursday, December 24 2015, in Clive, Iowa.

Jo, or Pena as her family called her, was born in Streepyville, Iowa, October 20, 1919 and is the daughter of Tony and Lena (Cardani) Gnatta. She lived in Seymour, Iowa, graduating from Seymour High School. She married John Vola, moved to Numa, Iowa and raised two children, Jean and Tony.

Her dedication was to her family during the time the children were growing, and when the youngest was in high school, she went to work for Jordan Locker in Centerville and also went back to attend Centerville Junior College to complete accounting classes. She then worked for Reliable Culvert in Centerville as their bookkeeper and assistant to Ruby and Oscar Gavronsky . She moved to Silvercrest at Woodlands Creek, October 2009, in Clive, Iowa to be near her children.
She was a devoted mother that enjoyed being active at all times, as a gardener raising and preserving fruits and vegetables and as an avid sewer of clothing, helping others by mending, and making quilts for all family members. She was the neighborhood hair dresser and family barber for all who lived near, and she was also the family handyman.

Jo was preceded in death by her husband, John her parents, and her brother.

Jo is survived by her daughter, Jean Helm of Des Moines, her son and daughter-in-law Tony and Marcia Vola of Des Moines, granddaughters Amy Helm of Des Moines, Dawn (Helm) Edwards of Des Moines, Stephanie (Vola) Clifford of San Antonio, Texas, grandson Matt Vola of Des Moines, and 6 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville, Iowa with Father Bill Hubmann officiating. Burial will follow in the Southlawn Cemetery, Seymour, Iowa. A visitation will take place at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville on Tuesday, December 29, 2015, with family greeting friends from 6-8 PM. A Rosary will be conducted at 7 PM. Memorials have been established to either the St. Mary's Catholic Church of Centerville or to the Numa Cemetery Association and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544. Jean, Tony & Families: What wonderful memories I have of times spent at your home and the kindness and genuine care your mother shared with the many lives she touched. She lived her life looking for the good in others and freely giving her time to many community causes like the Numa Cemetary Association. We were at Iowa Methodist Hospital with my FIL and unable to share the services, but I want you to know you were and will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. We have lost beautiful person ... But God has gained a faithful soul. Dennis

Jean and Tony & families.... Sorry to read of your Mother's passing. I was reading the Ottumwa Courier while on the way to Eric's near Chicago for Christmas and happen to catch the name. Hope she hadn't been ill and had enjoyed life to it's fullest. As I remember her, she did that as long as able. Please accept our condolences. Mary & Dean

We enjoyed attending Mass at St. Mary's Church. Morning mass daily when she was in Centerville. May she rest in peace. I always look forward to get her Christmas Card and note.
