Mrs. Betty Ruth (McCoy) Benz, age 87, formerly of Centerville, Iowa, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 5, 2015, in Littleton, Colorado, where she has resided for the last 2 ½ years.

Ruth was born on June 23, 1928 to Taylor and Iva McCoy in Centerville. She was married to her husband, James Edward Benz in 1946. They lived for a short time near Moulton, Iowa, after their marriage, but lived in Centerville, Iowa, for 60 years on the historic Prospect Dairy Farm.

James and Ruth were recognized as Farm Family of the year in 1974. Ruth, a farmer's wife, was also a well-known and respected grade-school teacher in the Appanoose and Centerville School Systems for over 30 years. In 1993 she was recognized for her excellence in teaching by being selected as Teacher of the Year by the Masonic Lodge. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary organization of women educators. Ruth was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Centerville where she served as a deaconess.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, 4 siblings, and her husband.

Ruth is survived by 1 sister (Bernice Craver, Exline, IA), 3 children (Judy Kiesz, Kirkland, WA; Barbara [John] Bowen, Littleton, CO; and John [Goldie] Benz, Olathe, KS), 8 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Centerville, Iowa with Pastor Lloyd Johnston officiating. A visitation will be held Wednesday, December 9 from 10AM-2PM at First Baptist Church in Centerville. Burial will follow in the Sharon Chapel Cemetery.
