Tribute & Message From The Family

Stephen Jon Knorr, 65, of Centerville, passed away quietly and peacefully early Friday morning on October 16, 2015, at his home with his family present.

He was born December 21, 1949, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Centerville to George A. Knorr and Kathryn (Buban) Knorr Houser. Steve was raised in Centerville and graduated from Centerville High School in 1968, and from Centerville Community College, now Indian Hills Community College, in 1970.

He was united in marriage to Cathie Lynne Gladfelder on October 1, 1976, at the Drake Avenue Christian Church in Centerville. Steve and Cathie have two sons, Evan J. Knorr and Joel G. Knorr, both of Centerville.

Steve was employed with Crescent Electric, first at the Centerville store, and then when it closed he transferred to the Ottumwa Crescent Electric store in fall 1998. He retired after 35+ years of service in April 2012.

Steve served in the Iowa National Guard for seven years and was involved in numerous local organizations. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and also the Elks Club for several years. Elks Club members will recall hearing him recite the 11th Hour toast many times at various functions. After his sons joined Cub Scouts, he served as den leader and a Tiger Cub organizer for many years with Pack #32.

He loved muscle cars, motorcycles, and doing anything mechanical. He liked figuring things out and preferred fixing them himself. His greatest hobby and love was in the field of electronics — he was a ham radio operator and enjoyed many hours conversing with fellow operators.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, George Knorr; brother, George Knorr, Jr.; and grandparents John and Mildred Buban.

He is survived by his wife, Cathie, and sons Evan (Brooke) Knorr and Joel Knorr, all of Centerville; his mother, Kathryn Knorr Houser, of Centerville; brother David (Sally) Knorr; sister-in-law Carol Knorr; uncles James Buban of Van Alstyne, Texas, and John Buban of Knoxville; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Lange Funeral Home & Crematory in Centerville, Iowa with Pastor Lloyd Johnston officiating. Burial will follow in the Dale Cemetery, north of Centerville. A visitation will take place at Lange Funeral Home on Tuesday, with the family present from 5-8 PM. Memorials have been established to either HCI (formerly known as Hospice of Central Iowa) or to the 18-80 Club and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544. Condolences may be shared online at www.langefh.com.

Cathie and Family,

When we learned of Steve's passing our thoughts went to what good memories we had of him. Cathie, you could not have chosen a better man for a husband and the boys were blessed to have a father that led his life by example. To Steve's mother, you raised a son that his peers valued as a good and kind friend.

With heartfelt sympathy,

Dan and Carol Pickard Kelley

I met Steve in the 4th grade at St. Mary's School. We went through High School with the class of '68 and Centerville Community College in '70. Steve and I spent lots of time playing pool and shooting the square on Friday & Saturday nights. He was my best man at our wedding in '70. He was a good friend, quiet and very polite. As life passes by, we all go our separate ways, seeing each other but not often enough. Dianne and I were shocked to hear of Steve's passing and extend our deepest sympathy to Cathy and sons.

Jim and I are so very sorry for your loss. Even though it has been 40 years or seems like yesterday that you and Steve stood beside us as we said our marital vows. In the early years we spent a lot of time together and then as so many times happens everybody gets busy and work schedules etc. We missed out on a lot of good times and we are so sorry for that. Steve was a good man and a good friend.
