Tribute & Message From The Family

Craig D. Stater, DMD, DDS, age 68 of Centerville, Iowa, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2015 at his home.

Craig Douglas Stater was born to Delbert & Mildred Stater on May 27, 1947 in Ottumwa, IA. In his early years, he enjoyed pestering his older sister Connie Jo (Craig Burnside) and riding along on Lowenberg Bakery deliveries with his dad. He was proud to have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, and kept in touch with his scoutmaster throughout his life. He graduated from Ottumwa High School, Southern Illinois University, and Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine.

He married Connie Ross on June 24, 1967 and they had two children: Stacey Stater (Mark Bierk) & Darin (Jennifer) Stater. He was a loving father to Stacey and Darin, and a devoted uncle to Debbie (Mike) Hoolihan, Kathy Owen, Cindy Burnside, Matt (Geneva) Ross, Eric (Mika) Ross, Scott & Debra Ross.

Craig established a thriving dental practice in Centerville, IA, where he served his patients well for over 30 years. He was an active and generous supporter of the Centerville community. His office staff was like a second family and they took good care of each other.

He lived for his grandchildren: Hannah, Clay, Paige and Layne. When they were younger, they loved to visit Ma & Papa's house (affectionately dubbed "Camp Run-A-Muck"). Papa Stater would often load the grandkids and the schnauzer into his large wagon pulled by his John Deere lawnmower and drive up to Sonic for ice cream. More recently, Clay and Papa Stater bonded over their mutual love of cars and the Speed Channel.

Craig loved Jimmy Buffett, classic cars, petroliana, the St. Louis Cardinals, playing cribbage, and food of all kinds – the spicier the better. He was blessed with many close friends with whom he shared one or more of these joys.

Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, October 25, 2015, 1-3:30 PM at the Majestic Theatre, 100 N. 13th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544. Please join us to celebrate Craig "Doc" Stater's life. An Open House will take place from 1-3:30, with sharing of memories beginning at 2 PM. The family has asked that everyone dress casually-Hawaiian shirts, parrot hats, car/oil & gas t-shirts, and Cardinals jerseys are welcome. For those who are unable to attend but wish to share photos or memories, please email them to slstater@charter.net. The public can also share online condolences on the Lange Funeral Home website, www.langefh.com.

Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I had a good life all the way. – Jimmy Buffett (He Went to Paris).

Condolence & Memory Journal

About a year ago I had the opportunity to meet Craig. He had a 1954 Chevy Bel Air two door hardtop that I was interested in buying. I called him out of the blue and asked him if he'd be willing to part with it. The rest is history. He was kind and gracious to me and my wife, inviting us into his garage and apartment upstairs the day we bought the car...we spent a couple of hours there talking about our car experiences. He was recovering from back surgery at that time and obviously not comfortable, but even so, he had time to tell us lots of stories! My condolences to his family. Will try to be there on the 25th with the Bel Air.

Dr. Stater will be greatly missed. He and his staff were always courteous, caring, and professional. We first met Dr. Stater after we had recently relocated to the Centerville community. Our daughter had a small bicycle accident and broke her two front teeth on Pancake Day. Being new to the area we had no idea where to turn. We went to the square on Pancake Day evening and were directed to Dr. Stater. He examined our daughter under the street lights and told us to bring her to the office Monday morning before school and he would fix her teeth so she would not have to go to school and face her friends with no front teeth. That is true compassion and a generous spirit. We will miss him. Dave & Gayle Johnson

To all his loved ones, I extend my most sincere sympathy. Doc always had a way of making me feel at ease when I was in his dental patient chair. His warm smile, cheerful greeting and gentle reassurance were always present, whether I was there for a routine cleaning or for some minor work. These small gestures were what kept me his patient for 20+ years. He will, without a doubt, be greatly missed. Peace and blessings to you all.

Several years ago when Craig was working on my teeth, he asked me what I was doing since I had retired. I told him I was helping an Albanian family learn the English language. They had come to Centerville with nothing except what they could carry. Thoughtfully he said "What do they need most?" I told him their biggest need was help with transportation so they could get to their jobs. Craig said "I want to talk to Connie but we have a van in the garage that we never use". They ended up giving the vehicle to the Hidris as an outright gift. As far as I know he never told anyone about this. Such generosity, such caring!!!! Craig Stater was a great man.

Dr Stater was not only my dentist for years but also the father of one of my best childhood friend, Stacey. I spent many many overnights at the Stater's home for Girl Scouts and also for Stacey's birthday bunk parties. He was a great father and he was so giving to others. My heart is heavy for the Stater family and my Girl Scout sister Stacey. May GOD be with the family to provide comfort and strength....

I had a dentist appointment with Dr. Stater on 9-11-2001,will never forget that day, he was busy with an emergency, so told me I would need to wait an hour, went over to a friend's house, and saw the 9-11 second plane hit the tower, (she was in shock, as had just heard of the first one). Then, went back over to have my appointment. He was professional, and a nice person, did a good job. Will never forget that day. So sorry, to hear of his passing. Warm regards to his family.
