Tribute & Message From The Family

Laura E. Shondel, age 57 of Centerville, Iowa passed away Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.

She was born August 15, 1958 in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Jim and Angeline (Brookhart) Bennett. Laura graduated from Davenport West High School in 1976. She was united in marriage to Virgil Shondel, Sr. on December 31, 1978 in Rock Island, Illinois. Virgil and Laura were blessed with five children, Randy, Terri, Virgil Jr., Chad, and Nickole.

Laura earned her associate's degree in drafting from Indian Hills Community College in 1996. She held a couple of different drafting jobs, before retiring from the field.

She was extremely fond of the outdoors, especially gardening and fishing with family members. Laura also enjoyed playing bingo, cooking and baking. She was a devout Christian, never missing an opportunity to read her bible. Most importantly, Laura loved her family and prided herself on being a devoted grandmother. Moreover, she possessed the ability to always believe in others, even when they were experiencing times of struggle.

Laura is survived by her husband of thirty seven years, Virgil Shondel, Sr. of Centerville, Iowa; four children, Terri Shondel of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Virgil (Terry) Shondel, Jr. of Mystic, Iowa, Chad (Kele Cossel) Shondel of Centerville, Iowa, and Nickole (Chad) Archer of Centerville, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and two brothers, Vernon (Lori) Graham of Cincinnati, Iowa and Danny Graham of Exline, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Randy Shondel; and a step father, Carl Graham.

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Monday, September 14, 2015 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Pastor Cindy Finn officiating. Burial will follow in the Dale Cemetery, north of Centerville. A visitation will take place at the funeral home on Sunday from 12-7 PM, with the family greeting friends from 5-7 PM. Condolence & Memory Journal

I only just heard of Laura's passing today. I have been out of town and was unaware of what had happened. I want to send my love and deepest condolences to Virgil and all of her family. I truly loved Laura. She was a wonderful person with a huge heart and always made me feel welcomed, besides the fact that she was a wonderful cook. I used to accuse her of trying to get me fat because she was always enticing me with something wonderful when I visited her home. And we'd laugh. I'm very sad that I won't see her anymore.

I have so many fun memories of all the times we had together as I was growing up. I will forever cherish the memories of spending time with you all on the river banks down on Dean Bottom, Halloween parties, trips to your house out in the sticks in Worthington Missouri in the back of Virgil's white king cab truck, the hog roasts, the fish fries and so many more memories.
