Larry Hiatt, age 67 of Centerville, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Larry was born in Centerville, Iowa on December 29, 1947, the son of Carl and Lela (Davis) Hiatt. He grew up in Moravia, Iowa and graduated from Moravia High School in 1966. He was united in marriage to Mary Kay Spencer on November 23, 1968 in Moravia, Iowa, and to this union of marriage, a son was born, Chad. They later divorced.

He entered the United States Army on February 3, 1969. Larry served his country faithfully in Vietnam. Through his service of two tours in Vietnam, Larry earned numerous military awards, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with Two Bronze Service Stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, the Army Commendation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Expert (Rifle) Award. Earning the rank of Sergeant, Larry was honorably discharged on February 2, 1971.

Larry was united in marriage to Judi Bates on July 11, 1981 at the East Pleasant Church of Christ in Cincinnati, Iowa. They recently celebrated thirty four years of marriage.

Larry worked for Union Carbide (Viskase, Curwood) in Centerville, Iowa for forty two years, retiring in May of 2013. He held the position of lead supervisor in the press area at the time of his retirement from Curwood.

Family was the driving force in Larry's life. He strived to do anything and everything to meet their needs, especially his grandchildren. Larry was a selfless man, with the thought of placing others first. He also believed in hard work. Larry enjoyed being on the move and working outdoors, especially his time spent mowing. Larry also liked listening to music, especially Shania Twain. Moreover, he had recently attended a Shania Twain concert at Wells Fargo in Des Moines with his grandchildren.

Larry is survived by his wife, Judi Hiatt of Centerville, Iowa; a son, Chad (Tygh) Hiatt of Canyon, Texas; four step children, Tami Carel of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Martin Wright of Centerville, Iowa, Amber Jones of Centerville, Iowa, and Shelby Firth of Centerville, Iowa; ten grandchildren, Teigen Carel, Caitlyn (Josh) Bailey, Lenzi Jones, Thatcher Carel, Hannah Long, Kage Jones, Quade Hiatt, Fisher Firth, Kross Hiatt, and Lola Jones; a sister, Linda (Mike) Grinstead of Ottumwa, Iowa; one brother, Bob (Connie) Hiatt of Ankeny, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Linda (Bill) Henderson of Centerville, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Lela Hiatt; and his grandparents.

Funeral services will be held 10 Am, Saturday, September 5, 2015 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville, Iowa with Pastor Terry Chapman officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Cincinnati, Iowa. A visitation will take place at Lange Funeral Home on Friday from 10 Am-7 Pm, with the family greeting friends from 5-7 Pm.
