Wayne "Red" Sampson, age 79 of Moravia, Iowa, passed away at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa on September 6 after a valiant 13 month battle with leukemia.
Red was born on July 9, 1936 in Carroll, Iowa to Lillian (Scharnweber) Sampson and Clarence Sampson. He spent his boyhood days in Carroll and graduated from Carroll High School in 1954. Carroll is also where he began a long career in the motel/hotel industry. After attending Parsons College he managed the 71-30 Motel in Carroll, Iowa. In 1961 he married Jeanne Groenewold. They soon moved to Spencer, Iowa where their four children were born and Red managed the Tangney Hotel.
The Sampson's moved to Sioux City, Iowa in 1972 where the couple co-owned and managed the Palmer House motel. In 1985 they moved to Quincy, Illinois where they managed and trained new managers in hotel operations. Jeanne and Red made Quincy their home for 27 years.
Red was very active in trade organizations. He served as president of the Spencer Jaycees, President of the Iowa Hotel/Motel Association and served on the executive board of the American Hotel/Motel Association.
They retired to Lake Sundown, Iowa. Red loved life and made many friends wherever he lived. As his oncologist said and all who knew and loved him would agree, "He was one of a kind."
His shed at the lake is filled with tools and various mementos. Despite always having one or more projects to work on, Red most enjoyed the time he spent with his family.
Red was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville, Iowa and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Red is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Jeanne, Jeff (Fay) Sampson, Dr. Ann Sampson, Carey (Rick) Jorgensen, Joel Sampson. Four grandchildren Ryne Sampson, Erica Sampson, Skyler Sampson, Gavin Sampson, great granddaughter Quinn Judith Ketter, his sister Diane (Bill) Dobson and nieces and nephews, brother-in-law Jim Groenewold and close friends Buck and Virginia Kaelber and Mike and Connie Nedved.
Red was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Art Groenewold and sister-in-law Judy Jones.
The family would like to thank the caring staffs at Mercy Hospitals in Des Moines and Centerville, Centerville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, his oncologist Dr. Angela Sandre and her nurse Ramona.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am, Thursday, September 10, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville with Father Bill Hubmann officiating, followed by a luncheon in the Marion Hall. A visitation will be held at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville on Wednesday, with the family greeting friends from 5-7pm. A Rosary will be conducted at 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the family of Wayne Sampson and/or Mercy Foundation, Des Moines, Iowa and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544. a superb job! It meant a great deal to our lasting friendship to have him
w/us at the altar at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Great Falls, MT. He flew
out from Minneapolis, MN to perform his role as best man. And that he did!!
Soon we'll celebrate our fifth-sixth wedding anniversary!

Dear Family,
Sorry to hear about Red. He was a very good friend, and co-worker. He was a caring person. My grandson will always remember him, Red fixed him up a tool belt and always had some type of project for him to do. He had a lot of fun with him. Red is up there building something or enjoying boating. He will be missed by all. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Sorry Sampson Family for your loss, I remember this old business man.

Jeanne and family, I have many fond memories of Red and my Dad together. I remember a piece of advice Red gave me when I was pretty young, "When you buy a pair of hunting pants, always get them a size or two bigger then you normally wear so you have room to tuck in all the shirts you'll need to stay warm. You can hold them up with a belt!" To this day I follow that advice.

I only got to meet "Red" one time and it was helping him with his medical records. But I had saw his name on charts for a very long time and was anxious to get to meet this man. I know it wasn't under the best circumstances and he didn't feel well that day but even in all of that I could tell this man was unique. He was so polite and even though he was expressing his frustration with

He was so polite and even though he was expressing his frustration with getting his records to all the places that he thought needed them and he was not having a good day. He still smiled and tried to be as respectful as he could. He apologized and I told him not to. I went straight back to my dept and told the girls that Wayne was so nice and that we were going to do whatever it took to make sure things were done the way he needed them to be. Im sorry to have lost such a great man. I see and hear all the wonderful comments about this awesome guy. RIP Red I am so glad to have got to meet you and your daughter.
